CAI TRADE SHOW
The Trade Show Committee of the Long Island Chapter of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) has been working diligently behind the scenes to prepare an exciting program for community Board members at the 13thAnnual CAI Long Island Trade Show. This year’s event will be taking place at the Hilton Long Island in Melville on October 5, 2019, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The Trade Show provides Board members with resources they can utilize in running their communities, such as educational seminars, and opportunities to speak with vendors and other professionals about issues concerning their communities.
As members of the Seminar Sub-Committee, Melissa Schlactus and I have been working to create an educational program geared toward providing Board members with information that they can use to competently govern and improve their communities.
Attorneys from this office, Edward Taylor, J. David Eldridge, Melissa Schlactus and myself, will be speaking on panels of several of this year’s seminars, including the following:
- Annual Meetings– Board members will learn the proper way to conduct annual meetings and elections;
- Ask the Experts– Board members will have the opportunity to ask questions about their community’s finances, insurance coverage, property management, and legal issues;
- Conflict Resolution– Panelists will discuss how to save time and money resolving disputes through mediation, plus CAI’s new Dispute Resolution Plan will be introduced which can be used to resolve disputes within community associations; and the
- Legislative Update– Board members will learn about emerging trends and proposed or current legislation that could impact community associations.
Other interesting and varied seminars that will be given throughout the day include:
- Best Practices– Board members can learn important tips from a variety of vendors that will assist them in running their communities.
- Care & Maintenance of a Community – Maintaining the common property is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities. Panelists consisting of a variety of professions will discuss what Board members should be doing to preserve their community’s physical assets.
- Problem Solved!– A panel will discuss real issues faced by communities and how Boards resolved these common problems.
- Risk Management– Board members will learn what to do to protect themselves from a contract that goes bad – and how to prevent a contract from going bad in the first place.
- Reserve Studies– Board members will learn about what a reserve study is and why it is needed to maintain and preserve a community.
The Trade Show will culminate in a keynote address from Craig Huntington. Mr. Huntington began his career in community association management in 1980 by founding a full service property management company in California. Mr. Huntington is currently the President of Alliance Association Bank, a division of Western Alliance Bank that provides services designed for community associations and management companies. He has been presenting managerial, leadership and motivational presentations on a wide range of subjects based on his experience for over 20 years. His keynote address is sure to be informative and lively.
The annual Trade Show is a valuable tool for Board members in finding service providers, meeting other board members, and learning useful information regarding all practical matters of community association living. If you’re a Board member, we hope that you will consider attending this year’s event. We look forward to seeing you there.
